About Word Counter

The Word Counter measures the length of a piece of writing. It is useful for essays with a word limit, articles, captions, product descriptions and anything else where length matters.

Words are groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute, which is a typical silent reading speed for adults, so treat it as an estimate. Your text stays in your browser and is not sent to a server.

Features

  • Words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences and paragraphs
  • Estimated reading time
  • Updates instantly as you type or paste
  • Counts emoji and accented letters as single characters

Frequently asked questions

How does the tool count words?

It counts every group of non-space characters as a word. A hyphenated word such as "well-known" counts as one word, and a standalone number counts as a word too.

How is reading time calculated?

By dividing the word count by 200 words per minute. Your own reading speed will vary with the text and your familiarity with it.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. The text is analysed in your browser and is not sent to our server or stored.
