About JSON Formatter

JSON is the most common format for exchanging data between applications and APIs. This tool formats JSON so people can read it, or minifies it to make it smaller for transfer.

Formatting also validates your JSON. When there is a mistake, such as a trailing comma or single quotes, the tool points to where it is and explains the likely cause. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Features

  • Format with 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs
  • Minify to a single line
  • Error messages with line, column and a code snippet
  • Copy and clear in one click

Frequently asked questions

Will formatting change my data?

Only whitespace changes. One caution: numbers beyond about 15–16 digits can lose precision, because JSON numbers are read as standard floating-point values. Keep such values as strings.

What are the most common JSON mistakes?

Trailing commas, single quotes instead of double quotes, unquoted property names, and missing brackets or commas between items.

Does it handle large files?

It handles input up to about 2 MB. Larger documents are better formatted with a desktop tool.
